The Director and Chief of Staff, Indigenous Portfolio at the University of Melbourne leads the coordinated development and implementation of the University's Indigenous strategy in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) and Indigenous leadership across the University. This role provides strategic advice, manages key projects, manages governance processes, and oversees stakeholder engagement with Indigenous communities, government, and corporate partners. The position plays a critical role in advancing Indigenous participation and Indigenous knowledges in education and research, through supporting the successful delivery of the Murmuk Djerring strategy.
Your responsibilities will include: Providing high-level and expert advice to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous), the Associate Provost, the Vice-Chancellor, Provost, Deans, and other senior University officers on a wide range of Indigenous-related issues.Leading and developing a high-performing, culturally aware expert team.Shaping strategic thinking with respect to the broad range of Indigenous issues within the University and externally.Who we are looking for
The successful candidate will bring a strong strategic mindset, exceptional communication and collaboration skills, and a demonstrated ability to deliver program outcomes that advance Indigenous knowledge and leadership and achieve University objectives.
Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies and cultures, and the ability to work respectfully with Indigenous Australians including academic and community leaders, staff, and students is essential for this role.
Your conceptual agility, diplomacy, strong personal ethics, and commitment to continuous learning will enable you to lead effectively in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders across a diversity of projects.
In developing a strong multi-disciplinary Indigenous Portfolio team, you will draw on strong people leadership skills and the ability to focus effort and nurture talent.
You will draw on your exceptional program and project management skills, experience in governance and policy, and the ability to draw on data and evidence to evaluate and improve programs and create impact.
Further information regarding responsibilities and requirements please refer to the attached PD. This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

The Indigenous Strategy team, led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous, develops, monitors, and reports on the University's Indigenous strategy while managing external and statutory reporting on Indigenous outcomes. They implement key Signature Projects under the Murmuk Djerring strategy and support Faculties and Chancellery in advancing their Indigenous strategies.
The team also oversees initiatives like Indigenous cultural heritage and truth-telling, promotes the University's Indigenous work through publications and events, and represents the University externally. They provide executive support to five Indigenous governance committees and manage high-profile events, including National Reconciliation Week.
