Under general supervision, leads a Middle School and Elementary Orienteering team. The season begins October 29th and concludes February 25th. Practices are held from 3:30-4:30 pm on Tuesdays. All races are held on Saturdays at parks across the greater Seattle Metropolitan area.
General responsibilities: Discusses approach to team dynamics with Director of Athletics and After-School Programs and After-School ProgramsManages player development based on program core competencies Works with Director of Athletics and After-School Programs and After-School Programs to create practice plans that are skill appropriateTeaches appropriate fundamentals, techniques, and skillsIs responsible for the health and safety of the athletesArticulates a well-defined and understandable coaching philosophyApplies developmentally appropriate and age-appropriate methods to coaching student-athletesTravels with the team for away races against other local schoolsEmphasizes sportsmanship and leadership among athletesClearly communicates to players, parents, administrators and staffPositively motivates athletes and promotes teamworkAttends all meetings and trainings as required by the league and/or Director of Athletics and After-School Programs and After-School ProgramsIs familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school's documents, including the Coaches HandbookSince safety and security are everyone's responsibility, takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials and facilities; travels with first aid kit at all timesPerforms other duties as assigned Qualifications Required Education, Training & Experience: Demonstrated competence and experience in coaching soccer requiredRecent successful coaching experience in a Middle School environment preferredHigh School diploma or GED requiredBachelor's degree in related field from a four-year college or university preferredMust possess or be willing to obtain valid First Aid/CPR card Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Deep knowledge of the intricacies of OrienteeringUnderstanding of the developmental needs of middle school and elementary school-aged studentsEfficient, well organized, and able to handle a variety of duties simultaneouslyFlexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the students and programProfessional manner, discretion, and appearanceSense of humor, energy and enthusiasm and ability to hold students and oneself to high expectationsAbility to collaborate with assistant coachAbility to work with students from diverse backgroundsAbility to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staffAbility to work and communicate well with students and their parentsAbility to maintain confidential informationExcellent verbal and written communication skillsExcellent customer service skills and strong work ethicProficient in appropriate computer skillsAwareness of proper body mechanics to prevent injuryAbility to stand for long periodsAbility to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, walk, and talkAbility to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and armsAbility to lift up to 50 poundsSome local travel may be required
