Exam# 20/50R41/01CR Natividad is currently seeking to fill a Per-Diem Nuclear Medicine Technologist position.
Under general supervision, this incumbent performs a variety of technical procedures involving the utilization of radioactive isotopes for the diagnosis and treatment of disease; and performs other related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The journey level Nuclear Medicine Technologist utilizes routine and complex radioisotope materials and equipment to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing and treating illness.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging Services and the medical direction of the Radiologist.
Nuclear Medicine Technologist is distinguished from Radiologic Technologist classes by its nuclear medicine focus and the specialized qualifications required of applicants, including appropriate licenses.
An incumbent may serve as a lead worker to less experienced staff.
Examples of Duties SIGNIFICANT DUTIES Performs prescribed nuclear medicine imaging procedures used in medical diagnosis and evaluation, according to established laws, policies, regulations and standards; calculates, prepares, calibrates and administers dosages of radiopharmaceuticals; administers medication for radioactive tracer dosages, orally or through venipunctures, under medical supervision; evaluates patient charts to facilitate procedure planning.
Prepares patients for test procedures; provides instructions to patients before, during and after examinations; ensures that patients are properly dressed for procedures; positions patients for the scheduled test and according to prescribed safety standards; shields patients as required; selects and uses proper immobilization and supportive devices when necessary.
Sets camera detectors, adjusting for proper angle, height and setting for each particular examination; calculates and verifies the strength of radiopharmaceuticals, measuring and diluting precise quantities of radioactive materials; performs computerized analyses and manipulation of readings; performs statistical calculations on test results; posts results of test to proper forms and routes to physician for interpretation.
Ensures quality control of nuclear medicine supplies, equipment and test results; calibrates equipment and instruments to maintain standards and confirm/ensure proper performance; reviews films for proper identification and quality checks.
Maintains appropriate records of radioisotope receipt, storage, use and disposal in accordance with State, Federal and accreditation requirements; monitors work areas for radioactivity.
Learns and implements new test procedures as necessary; keeps informed on new technical developments; may demonstrate nuclear medicine and other radiographic techniques to students and/or other employees.
Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceutical materials; reports equipment malfunctions; cleans or stores contaminated instruments, gloves and other items; cleans work areas; maintains and replenishes supplies May perform routine diagnostic examinations and assist with fluoroscopic and special radiographic procedures, if appropriately licensed.
Performs special projects as assigned; prepares correspondence, reports and other documents; provides excellent public relations and customer service in all assigned activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Examples of Experience/Education/Training MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Required License: Possession of a current and valid certification by the State of California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
(Please ensure that the name on your license/certification either matches the name on your application or is indicated somewhere on your application, as all licenses/certifications will be verified via primary source) Thorough knowledge of: Principles, procedures, methods, terminology and equipment related to nuclear medicine technology Radioactive materials and electronic equipment commonly used in a hospital nuclear medicine laboratory Nuclear medicine equipment and radiation safety (for both the patient and the operator); proper safety precautions and procedures involved in handling specimens, equipment, instruments and supplies Current laws and standards regarding nuclear medicine technology including those required by The Joint Commission (TJC), the State of California and, if applicable, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Working knowledge of: Standard administrative practices of an acute care hospital.
The use of laboratory procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
General biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, nuclear physics and mathematics.
Properties of radioisotopes and their application to medicine.
Theories and methods of data analysis and reporting.
Computer hardware and software typically used to support nuclear medicine technology.
Effective methods of communicating information to others.
Skill and Ability to: Perform standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using radioactive isotopes, in required sequences and with necessary accuracy and efficiency; accurately measure very small quantities of liquids; use and adjust radiation-counting equipment for varied laboratory techniques.
Calibrate instruments and equipment.
Prepare reports outlining the results of nuclear medicine technology procedures.
Comprehend and carry out technical medical instructions with accuracy.
Keep accurate records of the receipt, use and disposal of radioactive materials.
Administer patient injections and intravenous solutions; change dressings.
Deal with patients sympathetically and tactfully; evaluate and monitor basic patient vital signs such as respirations, heart rate, blood pressure, or neurological status to monitor responses to procedures.
Stay abreast of current drugs, radiopharmaceutical preparations and trends related to nuclear medicine technology equipment and methods.
Utilize technology tools, including computer hardware and software, to efficiently perform duties.
Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.
Provide excellent public relations and courteous customer service.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others including physicians, nurses, administrators, managers, vendors and other health care industry personnel.
EXAMPLES OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying.
An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is: Experience: One year as a certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist in an acute care hospital setting.
Certification: Certification by the State of California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist AND National certification in Nuclear Medicine Technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) Additional Information CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven.
