Job Description
The Principal Structural Engineer serves to lead engineering design projects and build Client relationships. This leader will collaborate with a broader team of engineering professionals to provide design solutions to industrial clients nationally and internationally. Projects require complex structures and foundations for Industrial, Manufacturing, and Utility clients. This leader must be self-motivated to independently solve problems and clearly communicate technical issues and solutions to Clients and team members.
Job Duties Include: Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the entire Salas O'Brien Structural Engineering Team. Provide high-level technical services to clients for their projects and technical support requirements. Provide technical and administrative leadership, policy support, and mentoring to junior engineers and staff. Plan, direct, supervise, and otherwise support client projects from proposal to completion. Make decisions at a technical and quality required to support the attainment of Salas O'Brien's goals for customer satisfaction and meet corporate earnings objectives. Identify, formulate, and initiate solutions to complex problems using structural analytical tools, while considering the coordination with the rest of the project. Understand, analyze, and construct system architectures and system component relationships. Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activity of others including other Salas O'Brien employees, customers, suppliers, and alliances at the project, office, or client level. Coordinate work activities that affect the quality of administration, proposals, engineering & design, document control, inspection & testing, and commissioning in accordance with Salas O'Brien's Quality Assurance Program Knowledge of most recent codes and standards to interpret and apply them to design. Identify and resolve problems that involve the use of conflicting or incomplete information. Develop schedules, budgets, resource allocation plans. Plan and schedule individual and team activities using planning and scheduling tools. Recognize the need for and initiate corrective action to address shortcomings in design or engineering processes that run counter to the customer's or Salas O'Brien's quality or safety requirements. Conduct root cause assessments and recommend practical solutions to underlying problems. Perform, supervise, and review complex calculations. Review design output and analyses. Conduct or direct others for on-site systems and facilities inspections for customers. Provide training and mentoring for subordinate technical staff and take an active role in personnel development by seeking out client perspectives on the Salas O'Brien products personnel and services rendered. Actively participate in the Employee Assessment and development process Establish credibility and competence with clients on technical issues and possess well-developed personal and presentation skills. Make technical assessments and design decisions involving uncertainty and risk. Perform other responsibilities as assigned or deemed appropriate of the position by management. Prepare technical reports to supervisors, management, and clients. Education & Experience: You have a bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering. 15+ years of experience in structural design and project management You are a licensed PE (NCEES Record preferred) You have experience designing complex structures such as industrial type buildings, heavy equipment platforms, pipe bridges, and trussed systems. You have experience designing complex shallow and deep foundations based on Geotechnical recommendations. You have experience of working with clients and developing proposals for obtaining new work. Location: Columbus, Ohio; Hybrid with 1-2 days in the office
Travel: Up to 15% nationally, and internationally
Physical Demands:
Sufficient mobility to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. Must have ability to walk long distances and possess the flexibility to maneuver in and around machinery to take measurements. When on customer startups, must be able to travel long distances by car or plane
