Job Summary
Position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program at the assigned school
through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practice for literacy instruction. Position
conducts staff development, models lessons, conducts classroom visitations and provides feedback to
teachers and administrators on the school's literacy program. Position is responsible for analyzing
school literacy data and planning for future literacy needs. Position is responsible for instructing
students individually or in groups to enable students to develop literacy skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
? Spends 50% of time collaborating directly with teachers to include, but not limited to, coaching,
co-teaching, facilitation of instructional planning, modeling, observing, providing feedback
and/or other related tasks to improve the school's reading program.
? Assists administrators and faculty members in interpreting data and designing approaches to
improve student achievement and instruction.
? Spends 50% of time providing direct instruction in the areas of reading and writing for identified
groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional
readers.
? Provides individual and/or small group instruction to meet the needs of students.
? Collects and facilitates the review and use of school literacy data to guide instruction and plan
for student needs.
? Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
? Demonstrates literacy lessons to teachers in classroom and workshop settings.
? Maintains an organized and accessible resource room that includes sufficient quantities of
instructional materials, books, and supplies (within budgetary constraints), and ensures high
quality reading instruction.
? Selects and uses technology, materials, and resources compatible with student needs, and
ensures that materials are interesting and challenging to readers.
? Assists with screening, evaluation and recommending interventions for students.
? Serves as a liaison between the school and School Performance/Coordinator for Reading by
attending meetings, disseminating information, curriculum writing/alignment with state
standards, and assists with textbook adoption.
? Assist with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions involving
the language arts program.
? Participate in parent conferences and provide instructional suggestions.
? Serves as a consultant for Child Study as needed.
? Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
? Must possess a Master's degree in Reading and be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with
an endorsement as a Reading Specialist.
? Must have completed at least 3 years of successful classroom teaching in which the teaching of
reading was the primary responsibility.
? Possess effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills.
? Must possess knowledge of the developmental nature of literacy instruction and the needs of
students requiring remedial reading instruction.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Highly complex duties. Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work collaboratively with
colleagues. Demanding schedule often includes meetings before and after school. Significant standing,
walking, moving, carrying, bending, reaching, handling, and other physical avidity.
