Brief Overview
The Associate Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing expert legal advice in the cases assigned to the Consumer Collections Bankruptcy Department, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and maintaining the integrity and quality of legal services provided to FirstBank Puerto Rico, its Holding Company, subsidiaries and affiliates in Puerto Rico
What You'll Need to Succeed
Analyze bankruptcy petitions and assess their impact on the bank's interests.
Draft, review and file legal documents, including agreements, objections, stipulations, relief from stay, proofs of claim, pleadings and any other legal documents on behalf of the bank in bankruptcy proceedings.
Ensure that the bank's interests are adequately protected during bankruptcy.
Attends the meeting of creditors, confirmation hearings, pre-trial hearings, and other similar proceedings on behalf of FirstBank Puerto Rico, its Holdings Company, subsidiaries and affiliates under the supervision of the Legal Counsel Supervisor.
Conduct legal research and provide recommendations based on the legal findings.
Provide day-to-day operational support of legal and regulatory matters in support of the business.
Manage and prioritize multiple cases and deadlines.
Stay updated on changes in law and regulations that may impact the organization.
Contribute to the development of internal policies that govern how the bank manages bankruptcy cases and handles debtor communications.
Ensure accurate documentation and tracking of bankruptcy cases, including financial outcomes and legal actions taken.
Regularly reports on the status of bankruptcy cases, significant level developments, and potential financial risk to Legal Counsel Supervisor and Legal Counsel Manager.
Assist in managing a portfolio of bankruptcy cases from initiation through resolution. Track cases deadlines, filings, and proceedings, and ensure compliance with court requirements.
Stay informed about ongoing legal education opportunities and assist in the development and mentorship of junior staff when applicable.
Minimum Requirements You'll Need:
Juris Doctor admitted to the Bar of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and Notary Public.
Must be admitted in good standing as an attorney to the US District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
Between (3) three to (5) five years of experience in the bankruptcy field
Litigation experience
Experience in contract drafting and contract review
In-house counsel experience
Speak, comprehend and write in Spanish and English are required for this job

Solid written and verbal communication skills
Experience in the banking and/or finance industry is a plus!
