The Opportunity:Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) was founded as an activist movement in 1984 in response to United States military backing of the Contra attacks in Nicaragua. BNB began as a grassroots peace activist movement collecting and shipping donated bicycles. The movement grew to have chapters across the United States, Canada, and, at times, Great Britain. BNB's mission integrates interests in the bicycle, the environment, peace, and social justice. BNB promotes bicycle technology as a concrete alternative to war and environmental destruction.
The BNB culture emphasizes a high reliance on trust and peer accountability rather than compliance with policies and procedures.
