A Day in the Life of a Civil Engineer
You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects. You support an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs such as MicroStation in order to fulfill production work on your projects. You will share your knowledge with staff and clients, to develop feasibility studies, concept plans, and construction documents, as well mentor your colleagues to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.
Work Schedule for a Civil Engineer:
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. The Silver Spring office of Toole Design is our corporate headquarters. We are conveniently located just outside of Washington DC in downtown Silver Spring, close to regional trails and networks on on-street bike infrastructure two blocks from the Silver Spring Metrorail/MARC Station and bus depot. Our beautiful 8th floor suite offers stunning views of DC and surrounding Montgomery County. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.

Requirements
Qualifications of a Civil Engineer: A Bachelor's or Master's in civil engineering4+ years of experience in a related fieldEngineer in Training (EIT) certification requiredPreference given to individuals with a PE and 5+ years of experience in a related fieldA broad knowledge base in civil engineering with a transportation or roadway focus and specific knowledge of horizontal and vertical roadway geometric design (MUTCD and AASHTO)Strong proficiency in engineering design software including MicroStation and Inroads (OpenRoads a plus)Detailed design experience for intersection and corridor wide improvements, including, but not limited to, meeting minimum ADA and drainage requirementsExperience working on engineering projects for VDOT, DDOT,or MD SHA is a plusExperience developing construction documents and cost estimatesInterest in multimodal and active transportation design is preferredExcellent task and time management skillsExcellent communication skillsDemonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplinesExperience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications It would be a plus if you had: Experience conducting public outreach and engagementExperience working with multidisciplinary teams and multi-phased projectsExperience with bicycle and pedestrian projectsExperience in construction or construction observation You'll be great here if:•
