Job Description Position Summary: The primary purpose of the civil construction estimator is to provide civil, below grade construction estimates with the information required for submission to the client. Estimating consists with understanding the requirements of the project, visiting the jobsite, attending pre-bid job walks, preparing needed labor, equipment and material estimates, managing subcontractor quotes, building project manpower resource schedules and reviewing the bid with project management, contract administration and estimating from cradle to grave.
The secondary purpose of the civil construction estimator to assist contract administration with creation of budgets after award of the estimated project. The civil construction estimator will work with both contract administration and operations to finalize a construction budget based on the estimate created during the bidding phase.
The third purpose of the civil construction estimator is to assist operations with the creation of change orders requests (if needed by Project Management) during the lifespan of a project. The estimator is the best resource to assist with the planning and preparation of project change orders based on field management's request.
Essential Functions: Review and summarize projects for bidding. Attend pre-bid job walk meetings and site investigations. Prepare labor, equipment and material project estimates. Prepare resource driven project schedules as per client's request. Assist PM's in preparing change order requests. Must be able to analyze and understand bid documents and construction drawings. Prepare below grade takeoffs for concrete foundations (piers, pads, oil containment), grounding, conduit, cable tray, site grading, etc. Manage subcontract submittals for site work, block wall, control house. Submit quote requests for materials. Possess good written and communications skills - ability to make other people understand the complex issues contained in the estimate. Possess good problem-solving abilities and evaluate data. Possess good computer skills and ability to learn multiple programs, such as estimating and scheduling. Experience in Microsoft Excel, Sage Timberline Estimating and Microsoft Projects is helpful. Minimum Requirements: Post-secondary education required (Business Administration related discipline - management, accounting or finance) or equivalent work experience. 10 years project management or estimating experience. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
