Summary
The Development Associate for Color and Construction is responsible for managing the approval processes related to color and material construction for Class A surfaces (e.g., carpet, TPO, vinyl). This role includes handling vertically integrated products and externally sourced raw materials and assemblies. Customer approvals must align with program timelines, including those for PPAP (Production Part Approval Process). The associate acts as the central point of contact for all color and harmony-related tasks and is responsible for regularly reporting on the status of color and construction approvals. The role involves collaboration with colleagues across multiple departments including product development, program management, manufacturing, engineering, purchasing, and external suppliers.
Key Functions & Responsibilities
Interface with customers to obtain appearance, construction, and color approvals for interior materials and components, ensuring timely delivery for PPAP milestones. Support and manage approvals for Tier II manufactured interior materials, including those for carpet, PVC, injection-molded plastics, and other miscellaneous components. Guide development teams and Tier II suppliers in matters of color and appearance, ensuring pre-qualification of samples before submission to customers. Coordinate phases of color development with suppliers, offering guidance for corrective actions until customer approval is achieved. Manage AAR (Appearance Approval Report) processes for all visual elements in Tier II and in-house production to support PPAP approvals. Oversee documentation and forms required for part appearance approvals (AARs, ATARs), and manage communication and shipments of parts. Maintain and manage a library of approved samples, including documentation and distribution of masters across various facilities. Act as the technical contact between management and suppliers regarding color and material harmony for interior materials. Maintain a secure electronic data system for records of approvals and manage the visual and mechanical evaluation of carpet and component colors. Organize shipments of parts and samples to plants, suppliers, and customers as required. Participate in cost-reduction initiatives and benchmarking activities. Ensure that the color harmony room adheres to 5S principles, maintaining cleanliness and organization. Responsible for maintaining color viewing and measuring equipment, including scheduling service and calibrations. Required Education, Skills & Abilities Bachelor's degree in Design, Art, or a related field. At least 1 year of cumulative experience in relevant color technologies is preferred. Experience in color and material construction approvals is a plus (internships or coop programs can count towards experience). Must demonstrate the ability to solve color-related issues based on technical understanding. Language Skills Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers and internal/external customers. Math Skills Proficient in basic mathematics. Color Perception A strong understanding of color dimensions is essential. The candidate should not be color deficient. Reasoning Skills This role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to manage priorities under pressure. Problem-solving based on technical needs and procedures is critical. Computer Skills Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
