Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for an experienced Controller for our partner, an incredible nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting businesses in the community overcoming employment barriers in San Francisco, California! This position is for immediate hire and full-time, on-site!

The Controller will collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Administrative Officer and other senior leaders to manage financial operations, oversee public funding and grants, and ensure precise financial reporting, strong internal controls, and regulatory compliance. This role is essential in managing the organization's financial resources and in developing a high-performing accounting department capable of scaling with organizational growth. The ideal candidate excels at problem-solving, thrives on inspiring and mentoring teams, and performs effectively in fast-paced, dynamic environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure the accuracy of financial data. Lead the annual audit process and external audits by funders, working closely with auditors to ensure timely and accurate completion. Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to the finance and accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture. Monitor cash flow and manage liquidity to support both operational needs and strategic initiatives. Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for senior management. Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and federal, state, and local requirements for nonprofit organizations. Manage team performance by setting clear goals, providing regular feedback, and conducting performance reviews and monthly check-ins. Supervise and guide the accounting and compliance team to ensure efficient and effective day-to-day operations. Effectively manage all revenue streams, including grants, public sector contracts, and major donor contributions. Cultivate strong relationships with funders, partners, and internal stakeholders to advance the organization's funding and revenue goals. Oversee the integrity of accounting systems, working with external vendors to adapt and improve where necessary. Monitor and analyze financial performance, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to enhance financial stability and achieve organizational objectives. Ensure compliance with all grant and contract requirements, including accurate reporting, invoicing, and financial tracking. Oversee the creation and presentation of accurate and timely financial reports to senior leadership. Develop and maintain robust internal controls to support continuous improvement and safeguard the organization's financial resources. QUALIFICATIONS Extensive experience in accounting or finance is required, with at least 2-3 years in a Controller role and in people management. Strong organizational, project management, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Prior experience with nonprofit accounting and managing public funding is highly desirable. Proficiency in managing accounting and financial management systems is essential. A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required; CPA certification is preferred. Advanced Excel skills and strong competency with the full Microsoft Office suite. Experience using Salesforce or other customer relationship management (CRM) systems is preferred. Proven ability to supervise and coach others effectively on projects. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrates integrity and a commitment to ethical financial management practices. Capable of making critical decisions in situations of ambiguity and incomplete information, while evaluating complex trade-offs. Proficient in independently writing and presenting executive summaries on complex topics to senior leaders; builds consensus through clear communication and handles sensitive matters with tact and empathy. Able to independently scope workstreams and projects, including identifying key questions, deliverables, and realistic timelines; skilled at adjusting project scope based on the capacity and skillsets of team members. Effective collaborator who thrives in a team environment with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and skillsets; naturally seeks opportunities to enhance the skills of others.
