Cytotechnologist Day shift, 40 hours per week
The cytotechnologist is responsible for the preparation, analysis and evaluation of cytologic smears for the presence of absence of normal/abnormal cellular patterns, presence of micro-organisms, inflammatory reactions, endocrinopathies, benign changes, pre-malignant changes, neoplasia and cellular responses to therapeutic agents. May perform HPV testing. Immunocytochemistry and other molecular techniques as required. Reports directly to the Technical Director.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepares specimens for analysis by centrifugation and other methods, following prescribed protocol for each particular type of specimen. Checks that label and names match. Signs out negative GYN slides, refers all other to a pathologist for further analyses. Evaluates Non-gynecological cells under the microscope; categorizes into five classifications: negative, atypical, suspicious, non-diagnostic or positive-malignant. Ability to perform HPV testing, Immunocytochemistry and other molecular techniques as required. Accurately records and reports to referring physician or clinic in a timely fashion. May assist clerical staff. Instructs pathology residents in cytologic diagnostic criteria. Reviews, prepares, and selects teaching slides for use in laboratory reference library. Maintain laboratory quality control by adhering to test protocols and standards. Assists Technical Specialist to instruct in specimen preparation techniques and orient cytology student technologists to the laboratory. Performs staining and rapid interpretation for adequacy on needle aspiration biopsies at various locations throughout the hospital and MEEI in a reasonable time frame. Participates in intradepartmental rotations including, gyn and non/gyn screening, rapid interpretations and special stains, may include molecular testing, specimen preparation, clerical assignments. Must have successfully completed an ASCP accredited Cytotechnology program and acquired CT (ASCP) certification.
Training time: Orientation to laboratory procedures will take from one week to one month (dependent upon past experience).
