Description
Performs general law enforcement duties within the Patrol Division under the direct supervision of a supervisory deputy, usually a Sergeant. There are elements of personal danger, situational awareness, professional discipline and teamwork.
Examples of Duties Essential Duties and Tasks Expected to complete a formal Field Training Program and probationary period as defined by departmental policies.Primarily works 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule and be available for emergency call-out situations as needed.Operates an assigned patrol vehicle in routine and emergency conditions.Vehicle and foot patrol of an assigned geographical area within the county.Community engagement within an assigned geographical area.Responsible for preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime; serving various civil and criminal papers; responding to calls; apprehending suspects; and executing related assignments within an assigned geographical area and subject to the laws, rules, and regulations of the State of North Carolina and the United States Constitution.Deputies must exercise judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties; and when faced with more difficult problems must know and understand the chain of command and resources available for addressing such problems.Deputies are subject to exposure to hazards associated with law enforcement work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, and hazardous spills with fumes, oils, gases, or flammable liquids.All duties are performed under regular supervision and are evaluated through observation, discussion and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, and proper judgment.Deputies are required to attend and complete mandatory in-service training as required by the N.C. Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission as well as departmentally required and voluntary training in-house and through outside agencies. Additional Job Duties Performs all other duties as required. Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to inmate sentencing, pretrial conditions, and release.General knowledge of the Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action.Ability to prepare and maintain records.Ability to render emergency assistance based on certifications.Ability to attend work regularly;Skilled in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment; possession of physical agility and endurance; excellent interpersonal skills. Typical Qualifications Qualifications Graduation from N.C. Basic Law Enforcement Training and ability to be sworn as a Peace Officer by the N.C. Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.Deputy I, Deputy II, and Deputy III classifications require experience and training as defined in departmental policy.
