Description

Governors State University is seeking to hire a Director of Arts in Education and Community Engagement, who is a senior member of the staff of the Center for Performing Arts leadership team. Setting the direction for educational and multi-generational family cultural content (music, dance, theatre, curricular content, multi-disciplinary, etc.), the Director of Arts in Education (AIE) and Community Engagement utilizes the season offerings, university relationships, and community to leverage innovative programming and build our service. By engaging Chicago Southland communities in art through education, entertainment, performing arts, and dialogue, they ensure the Center serves as a cultural hub for diverse programmatic and educational experiences. The director seeks to build the Center as a cultural resource as a home for the largest arts-in-education program in the Southland.

The Director established a strategic direction of the AIE programming as well as creating developmental opportunities for AIE engagement within the university and community. While K-12 is a primary focus, the AIE serves the campus as a cultural liaison to building artistic integration throughout the Chicago Southland. They are responsible for managing all aspects of the AIE program that annually serves over 20,000 learners. They also support the development of educational activities, family events, and advise on mainstage programming with the Center team as we serve our stakeholders. Responsibilities include but are not limited to selection and booking of cultural AIE performances, contract negotiations, curriculum development, managing budgets, AIE operations, and collaboration with Center staff in executing the AIE model. Supervising camps and programs within the vision of AIE are also expected. Additional duties are assigned in agreement with continued growth of the AIE programming. Additional work in donorship and assisting our development officer in grant potential and distribution with educational donors.

The Director serves as the primary ambassador to promote the Center and foster engagement, industry, civic and campus collaborations to further AIE goals. Partners include but are not limited to educational, cultural, community, business and internal campus partners (TAPS, the Nate, Social Justice Initiative, Colleges, DIE Programming, The Center for Community Media, Department of Digital Learning and Digital Media) with continued focus on expansion and outreach.

Essential Responsibilities 40% Content Curation: Programming, Curriculum, and Artistic Literacy Strategy: Lead strategy for AIE growth and partnership in collaboration with senior team and collective Governors State University (GovState) community (Provost Office, Deans, Division Chairs). Ensures that AIE and youth-centered programs adheres to established artistic quality standards while meeting youth, educators and community needs. Arts in Education series program: Coordinate curriculum calendar and dates for performance and camps. Research, recommend and book AIE cultural season working collaboratively with Executive Director, Theater Manager, Finance Administrator, and external parties (agents, managers, artists). Work collaboratively with Illinois Presenting Network/GSU/Community and regional partners to coordinate routing to ensure optimal costs. Youth Participation and Family engagement: Produce annual Summer Theatre Camp and academic year camps as applicable. Develop programming for community youth to expand engagement with the arts, included but not limited to family fun performances, free engagement activities, workshops, Q&A, lectures, backstage tours, etc. Support CAS STEAM Camp and other campus education programs as appropriate. Community programming. Develop host, moderate pre- and post-show engagement activities. Work with faculty members and Colleges to create and expand co-curricular and curriculum connections. Review, distribute and develop materials for campus and community members to support artistic literacy and create meaningful engagement with the arts. 25%Financial, Human Resources, and Program Management Operations: Accountable for the consistent implementation of the Center's signature programs: Arts in Education series, Camps, Arts-in Development, multi-generational family programming. Oversee reservation procedures with Box Office staff for AIE sales. Liaison with educators, school administrators, and parents on content guidance, operational, and student behavioral issues. Distribute pre-performance educational materials issues to each group and respond to inquiries. Work collaboratively with CPA and GovState staff to ensure a welcoming campus/theater experience for groups and individuals from reservation to buses arrival, lunches, and front of house experience, dismissal procedures, and post-show surveys. Budgets: Prepare and manage AIE budget including artists' fees, contractually negotiated hospitality/logistic expenses, curriculum engagement activities and develop with Finance Officer and Executive Director for approval. Contracts: Collaborate with arts networks and regional partners to coordinate routing to ensure optimal costs. Negotiate AIE contracts and ensure that all terms are consistent with GovState specs. Work with Theater Manager and procurement to execute artists' contracts. Human Resource/Supervisory Directly supervise, train, and oversee Arts in Education Box Office Associate, student workers, graduate assistants. Collaboratively supervise and engage Marketing team, Theater Manager, Patron Services Manager, and volunteer ushers. Work collaboratively with volunteer Board of Advisors members. 25%Community Outreach and Accessibility Serve as a point person to promote AIE accessible destination within campus and community networks, supporting marketing efforts, speaking to media outlets, boards and other stakeholders. Attend Board of Directors meetings when directed and present programmatic update reports to Board. Marketing Youth Materials - work collaboratively with Marketing Director and Marketing Coordinator to ensure that educational programs are positioned, branded and promoted with visibility and consistency. Gather materials for annual AIE brochure and educational events Draft copy and ensure that electronic materials (including website) are up to date. Expand cross-promotional opportunity with educational, cultural, and community partners. Analysis of non-attendance and lapsed schools, followed by targeted outreach to reengage. Manage and update list including state public, private, and charter schools Manage Ticket Subsidy Program Determine eligibility criteria and transparent communication. Identify eligible participants and administer distribution, education materials, and post-event surveys in collaboration with Box Office and Marketing colleagues. Maintain program budget Update funder on program scope, strategy and outcomes. Campus Curriculum Connection - work collaboratively with campus colleagues to increase and deepen student's meaningful connection and participation with the arts. Examples listed below: Work with Colleges and other University Departments to coordinate pre- and post-performance workshops for selected schools. Student Life and Prairie Place engagement College of Arts and Science partners: the Nate, Center for Community Media, TAPS Prairie Place - backstage tours, etc. Colleges and faculty- members - curriculum integration. Social Justice Initiative External Partnerships - Build and expand community relationships in partnership with the Executive Director, Board of Advisors, Development Officer, and Marketing Director. 10% Other Responsibilities Draft proposal and prepare final reports in collaboration with CPA Director for arts-in-education grants and other family-oriented and artistic-literary offerings. Participate in professional growth to stay current with trends and developments in the use performing arts in education. Attend and actively participate in departmental and staff meetings. Perform other duties as assigned by Executive Director. Starting Salary: $60,979.00.
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience as a leader/performer/educator for an arts-based organization or in arts programming. Strong written and verbal communication skills; an authentic and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge of project management principles and practices. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and other design applications. Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
•Experience using social media and other marketing tools to environments with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
•Experience in the theatre discipline.
•Knowledge of best practices in arts education youth development, especially related to diversity and inclusion.
•Self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, and relationship management skills (emotional intelligence).
•Demonstrated experience working effectively and responsively with and in historically
disinvested and diverse communities.
•Track record with fundraising, measuring and effectively communicating organizational impact a Board, funders, and other constituents.
