Job Purpose
The Director, Social Work is responsible to plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operations of the Social Services Department in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines, and regulations and The Brooklyn Hospital Center established policies and procedures. Provides professional oversight to Social Work staff throughout the organization. Assures that the medically related, emotional and social needs of our patients are met, and maintained at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities Assures compliance with regulatory agencies related to social work activities and transition planning Strategically assures collaboration amongst inpatient and ambulatory social workers/care managers to assure a smooth transition of care Oversight of all medical transport needs across the hospital; ambulance, ambulate, etc. Analysis of Financial Statements Productivity and workload management Ensures that department is in compliance with all New York State Department of Health and Joint Commission regulatory requirements, i.e. mandatory requirements, health assessments, licenses, certifications, medical record documentation and performance evaluations Provide individual and/or group supervision to LMSW staff members seeking clinical licensure. Complies with administrative, Human Resources and departmental policies and procedures Develops business plans, action plans, and other detailed planning documents Maintains positive labor relations Adheres to contractual language when necessary Addresses conflict among staff in a constructive and timely manner and consults with department or HR when necessary Effectively manages employees' attendance and punctuality Provides a balance and realistic assessment of an individual strengths and development needs Matches an employee's strengths with the needs of a job or task and makes assignments accordingly Provides timely and specific feedback with the intent of improving performance Arranges appropriate and helpful stretch assignments, formal training, or other experiences for the purposes of fostering a person's growth and development Ability to facilitate involvement and participation on the part of key stake holders Addresses and resolves patient/family and staff satisfaction issues on an ongoing basis Identifies and intervenes about specific LOS (length of stay) issues on an ongoing basis Develops and evaluates case management for high risk/high volume patients Utilizes data to improve department activities and performance Collaborates with other department leaders to assure the smooth integration of Case Management/Social Work services across the continuum Identifies and manages clinical revenue enhancement projects Assists with programs providing learning experiences for staff and affiliating students Actively participates in the formulation and revision of administrative and departmental case management policies and procedures Communicates and interprets policy additions/ revisions to staff Performs other related duties as assigned Use, protect and disclose patients' protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards Limit viewing of PHI to the absolute minimum as necessary to perform assigned duties Understand and comply with Information Security and HIPAA policies and procedures at all times Limit viewing of PHI to the absolute minimum as necessary to perform assigned duties Requirements
Qualifications Master's Degree in Social Work Minimum of 5 years hospital social work experience Minimum of 5 years of social work leadership experience New York State Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) LCSW Licensure required Screening Certification - Required Broad knowledge of community resources and case management/social work regulatory requirements and revenue cycle Strong understanding of CMS Conditions of Participation as it relates to transition management Knowledge of HIPAA and privacy regulations Knowledge of healthcare laws, regulations and standards Excellent written and oral communication skills Strong managerial, leadership, and interpersonal skills Effective problem-solving skills with ability to deal with physicians, employees, and other hospital staff with tact and diplomacy Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form Working Conditions Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to move around the work area; Sit; perform manual tasks; operate tools and other office equipment such as computer, computer peripherals and telephones; extend arms; kneel; talk and hear. Perform light lifting (up to 15 pounds). Mental Demands: The employee must be able to follow directions, collaborate with others, and handle stress. Work Environment: Works in a well-lighted/ventilated office setting. Subject to frequent interruptions. Minimal occupational exposure to infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, noxious odors, latex, or musculoskeletal injuries. Operate Office machines properly and in accordance with Hospital safety standards. Ability to work in accordance with Hospital Safety Standards.
