Position Summary
As one of the Public Health Institute's programs, Health Intervention Projects for Underserved Populations (HIPUP) conducts community-based research/programs for underserved populations (e.g., gender and ethnic minorities) in the field of substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and trauma prevention and treatment. Through collaboration with targeted communities, HIPUP strives to have a significant impact on health promotion and human rights for underserved communities locally and internationally.
The Health Educator will work for the SAMHSA.CMHS project to implement HIV, substance abuse, and mental health prevention and treatment programs for gender non-binary people (GNBP) in Alameda and San Francisco Counties. For the first 3-4 months, the Health Educator will also work on the clinical study investigating kidney function, HIV infection, and hormone use among transwomen living in the San Francisco Bay Area,
This is a full-time, remote, regular position. Applicants available to work 100% FTE (40 hours/week) are welcome to apply.
This position is currently remote and is required to travel to the San Francisco Bay Area (mainly Oakland and San Francisco) to attend meetings and conduct outreach activities and interviews a few times a week or more as needed. The person hired must reside within a 50-mile radius of Oakland or San Francisco, CA.
Full pay range for this position: $23.06 to $32.12 per hour. The typical hiring range for this position is $23.06 (minimum) to $27.59 (midpoint) per hour. The starting wage is determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct community in-person and online outreach targeting non-binary people (GNBP), transwomen, and transmen. Actively build collaborative working relationships with CBOs and other social groups. Provide Motivational Enhancement Intervention sessions to participants and provide case management/peer counseling to coordinate all aspects of care, including behavioral health, primary health care, and HIV/Hep prevention services. Refer participants to appropriate community-based organizations and health care services (e.g., substance use treatment, HIV/Viral Hepatitis (VH) testing and treatment, PrEP, HIV care, Hep B vaccination, primary health care, etc.) and other necessary services. Monitor and navigate referred services for participants. Coordinate with the local health clinic to schedule the blood drawing for each participant. Meet with participants at the local clinic and conduct assessments. Conduct intake and follow-up risk assessments. Collect and enter assessment and outcome data. Manage materials and facility logistics for outreach events and activities. Facilitate support groups. Process incentive payments to participants. Travel to the San Francisco Bay Area (mainly Oakland and San Francisco) to attend meetings and conduct outreach activities a few times a week or more as requested. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
1 year of relevant work experience. High school diploma or equivalent. Other Qualifications
Some working experience in the gender non-binary and/or transgender communities. Some experience in peer counseling or case management. Strong knowledge of HIV, substance abuse, and health disparity issues in the gender non-binary and/or transgender community. Ability to maintain accurate record keeping. Ability to recognize and resolve problems as they occur. Good attention to detail, self-motivation, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and good organizational skills. Ability and comfort in engaging in open and nonjudgmental conversations with participants from diverse backgrounds (e.g., ethnic, gender, and sexual minorities.) Prior computer experience (e.g., Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.) Knowledge of the HIV service system in San Francisco and Alameda counties is a plus. Must have access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to the San Francisco Bay Area (mainly Oakland and San Francisco) to attend meetings and conduct outreach activities a few times a week or more as needed, and work some non-standard hours as required. Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
