JOB DESCRIPTION TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 205 days SALARY RANGE: Based upon State Minimum Salary Scale for Professional Personnel TOTAL COMPENSATION: Salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation. QUALIFICATIONS: Baccalaureate degree, with a major in nursing, and eligible for West Virginia State license to practice as a registered nurse. Meets West Virginia Department of Education certification requirement for school nurse. Has the following professional competencies: Demonstrates expertise and experience in working with school-age children in health related fields. Demonstrates ability to work as a member of a team. Demonstrates ability to work individually without direct supervision. Demonstrates ability to organize and schedule time efficiently. Demonstrates knowledge of important, relevant, and current issues pertaining to school-age children. Demonstrates an understanding of health education programs. Demonstrates ability to maintain complete and accurate records. Demonstrates ability to relate a positive attitude in working with other staff member and the public. Demonstrates knowledge of the wellness concept and preventive health program. Demonstrates knowledge of health counseling techniques. Possesses health assessment and observation skills. Possesses at least minimal knowledge of local, state, and national health resources. Applicants who have unsatisfactory evaluations in the past year will not be considered eligible for consideration. Additional Minimum Requirements for Applicant Not Currently Employed: Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Assistant Superintendent SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS: Works with other school nurse(s) and LPN's. the School Health Clinics, with school personnel and with the community in planning and delivering of school health programs. JOB GOAL: To implement approved total health program at the local school level and collaborate with principals and teachers in providing health education for students and in-service programs for personnel, and provides nursing support and/or services at each of the schools. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Works collaboratively with School Nurse(S) and School Health Clinic to provide health services to students. Delivers school health services to students. Collaborates with principals, administrators, and teachers to provide health education and in-service programs at the local level. Utilizes community health care resources in providing school health services for assigned schools. Independently assesses and manages student health care needs. Complies with health and screening regulations as mandated by West Virginia State law, West Virginia Department of Education regulations and county policies. Documents health information for appropriate school personnel and health care agencies. Provides statistical health information for the school Health Office. Implements a follow-up program to assure correction of remedial health problems. Assists in modifications of the educational program for exceptional students. Assesses immunization status of students following West Virginia policy and properly maintains immunization records. Identifies and reports students at high risk for health problems. Completes health appraisals on all students refereed by Office of Exceptional Students, parents, and teachers. Attends Individualized Educational Program (IEP) meetings and writes health components of the IEP for students at their assigned schools. Completes special education documentation and reports as required by Policy 2419 and under the direction of the Special Education Director. Designates personnel to perform specialized health procedures on identified students. Trains and supervises designated personnel in performance of specialized health procedures. Provides emergency care and first aid to injured and ill students and school personnel. Maintains and replenishes health supplies. Provides instruction in CPR and First Aid for selected personnel. Counsels with students and parents, confers with teachers and other school personnel to share and interpret student health problems. Follows-up on all abnormalities found, assists parents by referring to appropriate health care providers. Controls communicable diseases by observing signs and symptoms and providing follow-up measures. Records all health information for Health Services file and on permanent records cards; complies health statistics for monthly and annual reports. Coordinated and assists in special medical clinics approved by the Office of Health Services. Follows up on all accidental reports of students submitted by principals. Provides pre-enrollment screening for kindergarten students. Utilizes self-appraisal for the improvement of administrative skills. Willing to provide and/or assist with classroom health education that aligns with educational standards. Demonstrates unbiased attitudes in fulfilling administrative responsibilities. Performs other assignments related to the job as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Board Policy on evaluations of professional personnel.
