The Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all swimmers in and around the aquatics area. The primary responsibilities of a Lifeguard is to prevent accidents, actively scan, and respond to incidents, accidents, and emergencies quickly and effectively. Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, actively scanning the assigned zone every 10 seconds from bottom to top. Respond to any situation/emergency within 10 seconds based on the training and certification, and the emergency procedures established by the Hockomock YMCA. Never leave the pool unattended. Choose guard position based on glare, pool activity, swimmers' abilities, and zone size; positioning in an area of the assigned zone so can best response to any distressed swimmer or emergency within 10 seconds. Rotate position regularly, checking the area for hazards or dangerous conditions before assuming responsibility of a zone or pool. Only perform ancillary duties (socializing, eating, chemical testing, etc.) during "eyes off" time, and not while guarding. During "eyes off" time, assist with ancillary duties, such as chemical testing, swim testing, cleaning, organizing the deck/equipment, checking first aid supplies. Know, understand, and consistently enforce all rules and policies, being firm, fair, and polite when explaining rules and policies to members. Swim test & mark all children under 14 years old. Provide excellent member service, being professional & friendly, greeting members, and helping to answer any questions or concerns. Arrive on time and be ready to guard at the start of the scheduled shift. Attend monthly in-service trainings and staff meetings, as required. Conduct regular chemical tests and report any issues to the Aquatics Director. Complete incident/accident reports immediately and submit them to the supervisor prior to the end of the shift. Find coverage for shifts when unable to work, communicating coverage with the Aquatics Director in a timely manner. Clock in and out accurately and on time, alerting the Aquatics Director to any missed or incorrect punches. Follow the pool schedule, ensuring the pool set up reflects the correct number of lanes. Uphold the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility by being a positive role model and displaying a positive image of the YMCA.
