If interested, please apply as soon as possible. There are (2) part-time positions open in the Public Works Department, scheduled to work 19 hours per week. Under immediate supervision, performs routine, unskilled, and repetitive maintenance manual tasks in the areas of building, grounds, streets, parks, and various City facilities; and performs related work as required.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is the training classification in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents are assigned to perform a variety of routine, unskilled, semi-skilled, and repetitive manual maintenance tasks related to buildings, grounds, streets, parks, and various City facilities. This position is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I/II series in that the latter performs work requiring greater jobs skills and with less supervision. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Examples of DutiesManagement reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations where appropriate so qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.Performs routine unskilled, heavy manual laboring work in street maintenance such as cleaning gutters, drains, ditches, catch basins, creeks, and culverts.Picks up and discards trash, brush, leaves, debris, deceased animals, discarded furniture, and trash from homeless encampments; trims and removes trees, shrubs, and bushes; performs weed abatement.Assists in repairing street surfaces by spreading, raking, or shoveling asphalt or other materials.Performs ground and landscape maintenance such as picking up rubbish, raking leaves, mowing. and watering lawns, edging, trimming, blowing, and pulling weeds.Loads and unloads materials, supplies, and equipment.Sets up traffic safety control devices, cones, and barricades, as necessary.Drives a City vehicle and operates basic power tools; operates a variety of equipment and vehicles; performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles as assigned; maintains safe conditions of equipment and power tools and reports need for repairs.Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed.Assists in building and facilities maintenance tasks such as cleaning and other janitorial duties.Complies with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.Performs other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesKnowledge of: Techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of streets, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, and related facilities.Methods, techniques, tools, and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, signs, sewers, storm drains, drainage channels, and related public works infrastructure and facilities. Safe operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools, motorized vehicles, and equipment common to the field.Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the type of work being performed.Proper placement of cones, barricades, and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites. Procedures and techniques of concrete and asphalt work.Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations.Practices and procedures used in weed abatement, watering, fertilizing, and spraying of plants, turf, and trees.Basic construction and repair methods.Plant selection and care, shrub and turf maintenance, and proper pruning methods.Methods and techniques related to the proper handling of toxic chemicals and pesticides.City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work.Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.Ability to: Perform unskilled, semi-skilled, and repetitive maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area(s) of work assigned.Review, interpret, and complete assigned work orders.Safely and effectively operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work performed.Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.Read and interpret plans and diagrams.Perform asphalt, concrete, and pipe work.Work with paints and prepare surfaces for painting.Work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic, in confined spaces, in trenches, or in other environments.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Perform heavy physical labor.Maintain accurate records. Work extended hours and rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. QualificationsAny combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:Education:Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. required. Experience:Six (6) months of experience performing heavy manual labor and the use of power tools.Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to operate varied hand and power tools and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; and vision to inspect and operate equipment. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to operate and repair tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff. Environmental CONDITIONSEmployees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust and air contaminants. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Part-time employees are limited to working 19 hours per week. RETIREMENT All part-time employees are enrolled in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan; Mission Square Retirement Plan. Part-time employees contribute 7.5% per pay check.SICK LEAVE: Accrue one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked; capped at 80 hours.
