THE POSITIONPerforms a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in an assigned area including street maintenance, landscape maintenance, or facilities; and provides technical support to various departments.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is the entry-level maintenance class in the Maintenance Worker series. The class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters as are positions allocated to the Maintenance Worker II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non-directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives immediate supervision from the Recreation Manager and technical and functional supervision from the Maintenance Worker II or a higher-level maintenance position.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be available to work weekends and evenings as required. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs minor repairs on equipment and reports the need for major repairs; check and adjust fluid level; grease and lubricate moving parts as required.Installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.Performs repaving, patching, overlaying, pothole, and crack sealing repair of asphalt.Answers questions from the public at work site.Maintains and repairs service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.Inventory and order supplies and equipment related to assigned task.May perform a variety of general manual labor duties.Supports the relationship between the City of Baldwin Park and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.WHEN ASSIGNED TO FACILITIESPerforms general electrical, painting, plumbing, and carpentry work.Performs a full range of building crafts work including structural fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance tasks, during maintenance and repair, remodeling, and new construction assignments.Installs, repairs, and replace walls, flooring, ceilings, windows, and roofing on municipal buildings, as well as other structures related to municipal facilities.Repair and replace plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets, and pipes.Inspect, adjust, and repair boilers, heating, and air conditioning systems.Test, repair and install electrical systems and fixtures.Design, construct, repair, and install wood and Formica tables, countertops, and cabinets.Hang and install doors, closures, windows; install dry wall and wood paneling.Perform a variety of minor building maintenance duties.WHEN ASSIGNED TO LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCEPerform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks in the construction and repair of park and community facilities including irrigation systems, restrooms, and playing fields.Inspect Park grounds, structures, medians and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism.Clean and clear park grounds, structures and playing fields of debris and hazardous conditions.Plant, fertilize, and maintain trees, shrubs, and plants; clear sites of weeds; apply pesticides as directed by licensed staff.Identify landscape areas needing repair and maintenance while driving to/from work site and take corrective action.KNOWLEDGE OF:Common tools and materials used in public works maintenance.Basic repair and maintenance procedures and practices.Safe work practices and policies.ABILITY TO:On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Intermittently, identify potential safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember supervisor's instructions; and explain jobs to other employees.Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on heavy equipment to begin operations; perform simple and power grasping; pushing and pulling; fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.Perform maintenance activities.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Work with the variety of tools related to public service maintenance.Learn to use computer in order to maintain variety of inventory, replacement and repair records.Perform heavy manual labor.Learn to work independently in the absence of supervision.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAny combination of experience or training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:One (1) year of experience in maintenance work including some semi-skilled assignments is desirable.Hight School Diploma or equivalent.Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of appointment, a valid California Class C Driver's license, and maintain a satisfactory driving record. The Short-Term Disability Insurance Plan provides benefits commencing on the 31st day of non-work-related injury or illness, and employees will be eligible to receive cash benefit of 66.67% of their weekly salary up to $1,871 for up to 22 weeks.
