POSITION SUMMARY: GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision of Manager of Breast Imaging, the Radiology/Mammography Technologist provides X-ray and Mammographic technical skills to the Department mission. Duties are to work as technologist and duties in other areas and/or modalities as necessary. The Radiology/Mammography technologist performs X-ray and mammography exams for use of diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury to patients of all ages.

Position: Mammography Technologist Department: Breast Imaging Schedule: Full Time ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Radiology/Mammography Technologist Duties:

1. Performs x-ray and mammography technologist tasks as required. Operational procedures as required and necessary for proper departmental work flow. Satisfies operational requirements to include covering the department as determined necessary through Breast Imaging Manager or Radiology Director.

1.1 Completes procedures in timely fashion while providing quality radiographs for radiology/mammography and outside departments

1.2 Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times.

1.3 Follows all department, established and appropriate policies and procedures as required. Makes changes and adjustments to techniques as required by observance of Radiologist, Supervisor and self-improvement and initiative

1.4 Sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper technique and exposure factors as necessary and required. Adjusts techniques and factors when necessary due to improper studies or quality factors

1.5 Performs duties as required in all areas of department either within Diagnostic Mammography and X-ray or outside when appropriate for the Department mission as determined by either the Manager of Breast Imaging or the Radiology Director.

1.6 Follows all radiation safety procedures to ensure patient is not compromised as it relates to radiation safety. Understands all radiation safety issues through annual compliance with radiation safety briefing and/or seminars.

1.7 Performs appropriate studies as determined through the established imaging standards protocol. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study.

1.8 Works through radiologist requirements to provide appropriate views and films and provides additional views and variations of techniques as required by Radiologist or QA technologist.

1.9 Provides service and care to patients of all ages.

1.10 Works schedules as required.

1.11 Performs patient registering and scheduling workflows as needed

1.12 Performs transcription of patient exam referrals into EPIC/Radiant

Cross Training and or Cross Modality Coverage

2. The Radiology/mammography Technologist performs cross training and cross modality coverage in other departments as required and determined necessary for operational effectiveness, patient care and departmental needs.

2.1 Cross trains into other modalities as determined by Manager and Department needs and demands.

2.2 Performs job functions as required in all areas of Radiology Department as determined by the Manager, and/or Chief of Breast Imaging

3. Understands and adheres to managed care guidelines and procedures and works to ensure that guidelines are adhered to and proper policies are implemented.

Customer Service:

4. Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved:

4.1 Communicates patient complaints professionally.

4.2 Handles phone calls and all requests for services both professionally and appropriately.

4.3 Treats patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect and reports any/all problems to supervisor.

4.4 Accommodates patient needs and staffing needs and requirements through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.

4.5 Understands the requirements of the department by providing services to patients not only in performing of studies but also in providing any/all information on reports as necessary and appropriate.

4.6 Faxes reports and gives referring physicians assistance when patient may ask questions and/or request for Radiology reports come up.

4.7 Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and any inappropriate behavior.

4.8 Monitors patient conditions and if/when conditions are determined assistance may require, employee facilitates the best course of action to include: nursing involvement, other assistance, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.

4.9 Always checks two forms of identification to ensure correct patient and exam prior to performing the study.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

5. Documentation of procedures to include, completing of procedures properly in the Radiology Information System and entering proper demographics timely and efficiently.

5.1 Ensures that all required documentation is properly performed to include but not limited to any/all of the following:

1. Proper filling out of requisitions

2. Proper procedures in computer related to all procedures performed.

3. Proper recording of any required department and or insurance/ managed care requirements for recording and or billing of Radiology Procedures.

5.2 Understands and can work with down time procedures without delaying patient

care

Standard of Conduct and Competencies:

6. Conforms to Faculty Practice Plan standard of conduct at all times, while providing the best possible patient care, customer service and pride and professionalism of self and work. Required to maintain competencies as applicable: education, radiation safety, positioning, equipment, quality control, and record maintenance, preparation of contrast media, patient skills, infectious control, problem solving, employee education and required training and cross training. Employee will be responsible at all times for following Faculty Practice Plan and/or Department established policies for all of the following:

6.1 Interpersonal relations with patients, visitors, physicians, and fellow employees and staff are carried out in a courteous, professional, friendly and understanding way.

6.2 Employee is neat and well-groomed and observes all radiology and/or Faculty Practice Plan dress codes. Identification badge is worn at all times while on duty.

6.3 Employee does not take advantage of days off. Attendance and tardiness records will be monitored by Manager of Breast Imaging and any variances termed excessive will be pursuant to possible disciplinary action and/or modification of duty.

6.4 Employee ensures proper notification is provided of any absence or tardiness.

6.5 Employee does not take advantage of break time and or lunch or dinner time.

6.6 Employee takes corrective action to improve performance when required.

6.7 Employee works at all times with other members of the department and or health care team by assisting and helping others with duties and or assignments, whenever their own schedule permits.

6.8 Employee does not make or receive unnecessary personal phone calls. Abuse of personal calls will be observed by Manager and/or Director.

6.9 Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.

6.10 Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Equipment Maintenance:

7 Helps to maintain equipment to maximize equipment up time, patient care, and minimize cost to the Faculty Practice Plan. Notifies Manager of problems as necessary

OPERATIONAL AND TECHNICAL ISSUES:

1) Performs procedures as required by patient volume and supervisor requests.

2) Handles assignments given by manager.

3) Able to vary schedule based on operational demands of department.

4) Available (understands) demands include possible emergency call-in.

5) Does not abuse breaks and lunches, flexes schedules of lunches to accommodate patient workloads and manager requirements.

6) Improves self and department by participating in cross-training.

7) Understands varying demands on Radiology Departments and various customer service requirements ensuring that patient care demands come first in day to day operations.

8) Performs studies in timely, accurate and professional manner at all times.

9) Works as team player at all times.

10) Problem solves constantly to help facilitate patient care, high volume, demands and management requirements and concerns.

11) Responsible for performing times, and quality radiographs. Repeat films when exposure factors determined inadequate on when additional films may be required to obtain the desire results. Desired results may be determined by radiologist, supervisor and requesting clinician.

12) Notifies Manager and/or Supervisor of potential issues, problems, concerns or requests for improvements and quality initiatives.

PROFICIENCY CRITERIA AND REQUIREMENTS FOR CLINICAL PARAMETERS.

Radiology Supervisor and/or Manager of Operations works with and/or through staff to ensure the following department requirements are fulfilled through proper management and/or actions and can be performed by any/all staff technologists.
All other Radiology/Mammography exams either added as new or currently in place can be performed as required Ensures the following parameters and issues are maintained and or performed at all times by all staff Radiology/mammography safety for personnel and patients Thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology Protocols kept current and state-of-the-art. Works through radiologist and staff to develop and improve protocols Communicates procedures, concerns and delay to patients at all times Maximizes patient flow through both Radiology/Mammography schedule and new program initiatives Utilizes schedule logs to keep patients informed of procedures and delays. Enters all pertinent Radiology/Mammography patient information into Information System as required Maximizes codes and reimbursement issues within Radiology/mammography via code updates, changes and knowledge base Understands and implements all updated managed care criteria for reimbursement and billing protocols Communicates with service vendors regarding service and equipment related issues Ensures call ins are timely, efficient , qualitative and complete Updates and develops as necessary, the most appropriate radiology/mammography protocols to maintain department requirements for clinical and research purpose.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires knowledge of principles and procedures of diagnostic radiology and mammography and the operation and maintenance of Radiologic equipment to include mammography

Generally acquired through the completion of two years post-high school training in an approved, school of Radiologic technology. Massachusetts Radiology license and ARRT (M) required

The Radiology/Mammography Technologist requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to provide technical supervision to staff technologists.

State Radiology and Mammography license required and all applicable Radiology/ mammography education requirements
