Job Summary
The Hospital Assistant III, under the supervision of the Department of Surgery clinic management and guided by the policies of Ambulatory Services, plays a key role in delivering care to patients within the Department of Surgery ambulatory group practices. Collaborating closely with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant III serves as the primary contact for new and returning surgery patients at UCSF Medical Center. This role involves various personal care and clinical procedures, such as rooming patients, taking vital signs, conducting medication reconciliations, and managing patient flow. The Hospital Assistant III is also responsible for ordering and stocking medical supplies, performing laboratory procedures, and ensuring adherence to UCSF's Telephone and House Standards. The position requires flexibility, as the Hospital Assistant III may work at any UCSF campus as needed.
Clinical Support Perform routine clinical functions and document in patient charts, including vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and chief complaints. Facilitate interpreter participation for medical appointments as needed, and document interpreter usage. Act as a chaperone during patient examinations. Serve as an internal float for the department as requested. Transport patients safely and monitor patient flow in and out of the clinic. Obtain specimens and perform simple Point of Care Testing (QA/QC, EKGs), and ensure proper specimen handling and processing. Update and maintain mandatory logs (e.g., temperature, disaster cabinet, crash cart). Facilitate patient referrals and obtain medication authorizations. Assist physician staff in patient communication and ensure compliance with all safety, infection control, and clinical practice policies. Communication Maintain professional and courteous telephone communications in line with Medical Center standards. Advocate for patients by facilitating provider punctuality and informing them of delays. Share pertinent information with health team members and notify appropriate supervisors of any issues. Utilize Electronic Health Records (APEX) for documentation within the scope of practice, including vital signs, patient history, medication and allergy entries, and scheduling. Operations & Maintenance Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms, and oversee lab supplies and equipment maintenance. Coordinate meal and rest periods with other Hospital Assistants to ensure clinic coverage. Obtain insurance authorizations for medications, procedures, and review authorizations. Adhere to infection control procedures and participate in QI and customer service initiatives. Practice Coordination Understand the distinct care delivery methods in each medical practice. Coordinate appointments with multiple providers and communicate practice policies to patients and referring physicians. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines. Collect and verify insurance information, document authorizations, and communicate UCSF's administrative and financial policies to patients. Master various information technology systems, such as APEX and Front Desk, to support patient processing. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR Certification. Preferred Qualifications
One year of experience as a Medical Assistant/Hospital Assistant in a Surgical practice. License/Certification
