Responsibilities and Duties:
Assists the physician as directed in providing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation. Conducts CLIA waived laboratory tests for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, performs phlebotomy procedures, triage patient prior to the provider visit on date of service, obtains precertification/prior authorization for imaging procedures, coordinates referral to various subspecialty providers as necessary, and other general office/lab functions as necessary.
Requirements: Education: Graduate of high school with previous experience in a health care facility/office/clinic. Current certification of medical assistant and/or phlebotomist. Two years' experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
Verbal and Written Communication Skills: Must be able to read, write and speak the English language fluently. Must be able to relate to individuals with various ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Must be able to communicate with other offices in coordination of patient care. Positive interpersonal communication skills. Must demonstrate proficiency in taking and recording vital signs. Must demonstrate proficiency in performing venipuncture and routine laboratory tests.
Interpersonal Skills: Relates cooperatively and constructively with all patients, guest, families, physicians, peers, and all healthcare members as well as anyone that JHS' employees interact with while performing their daily duties.
Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Full Ambulation and precise eye-hand coordination.
Essential Mental Abilities: Knowledgeable and competent to perform essential functions. Must be able to deal with a variety of personalities with whom the employer comes into contact with, both pleasant and irate. Able to adapt priorities and assignments to frequent interruptions. Includes calculation of adult and/or pediatric dosages and the interpretation of lab values and other diagnostic tests.
Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to visually and audibly perform all essential functions.
Essential Physical Requirements: Moderate to high amount of walking, standing, sitting, reaching, pulling, pushing, stooping, and kneeling. Minimum lifting requirement of 50 pounds. Requires full range of motion including manual and finger dexterity, eye/hand coordination. Requires corrected vision to acceptable range.
Exposure to Hazards: Exposure to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, and chemical products. Frequent exposure to infectious diseases. Has the potential of coming in contact with bloodborne pathogens. May come in contact with various fumes, odors, toxic waste and contaminated biological waste. Work setting is frequently fast paced, occasionally variably paced.
