Responsibilities Job Summary
Performs OB procedures under the supervision of an RN circulator. Performs pre-operative procedures such as selection and placement of appropriate surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures and other sterile supplies during surgical procedures.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's departmental policies and procedures.
In order to be classified as an OB Tech, staff member must demonstrate proficiency in required procedures used both pre-operatively, perioperatively and post-operatively.
Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies and ensuring the working order of instruments. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the operative procedure (before, during and after).
Completes physician orders by transcribing or inputting data, telephone follow-up or other required actions. Utilizes appropriate customer services skills with patients, physicians and staff.
Anticipates the needs for additional equipment, supplies and/or instruments by assessing specific patient, physician and procedural requirements. Responds quickly and efficiently to requests and anticipates need for other resources.
Participates in the re-stocking and cleaning of OR's and LDR's/LDRP's. Maintains a clean safe and orderly work area and reports unsafe conditions.
Provides care based on the care plan and performs nursing functions as directed by the licensed care giver.
Serves as a preceptor to students and orientees in the OB Tech role. Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED Required
Experience
>10 months Nursing Assistant or equivalent patient care function; or graduate of a vocational surgical technician school. Required
Licenses and Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) Current BLS Certification Required
