JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for evaluating/assessing needs of referred patients and formulating treatment plans. Will assess, plan, organize, and participate in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevent deformity of patients suffering from disease or injury.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Rehabilitation Services Director

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Education

Master degree in Physical Therapy or Doctor of Physical Therapy degree required.

Work Experience

Must have one (1) year participation in an accredited Clinical Residency program. Some work experience as a Physical Therapist required.

License/Certification

Tennessee Physical Therapy license

Current BLS/CRP certification required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides therapy services defined in treatment plans.

Works cooperatively with physicians, case managers, and adjustors.

Provides educational information about physical therapy and physical therapists, injury prevention, ergonomics and ways to promote health.

Refers clients to community resources and services.

Plans, prepares and provides individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in patients.

Performs and document an initial exam, evaluating the data to identify problems and determine a diagnosis prior to intervention.

Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefit.

Administers manual exercises, massage and/or traction to help relieve pain, increase the patient's strength, and decrease or prevent deformity and crippling.

Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.

Confers with the patient, medical practitioners and appropriate others to plan, implement and assess the intervention program.

Reviews physician's referral and patient's medical records to help determine diagnosis and physical therapy treatment required.

Obtains patients' informed consent to proposed interventions.

Discharges patient from physical therapy when goals or projected outcomes have been attained and provide for appropriate follow-up care or referrals.

Tests and measures patient's strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory and circulatory efficiency and record data.

Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation.

Provides information to the patient about the proposed intervention, its material risks and expected benefits and any reasonable alternatives.

Informs the patient when diagnosis reveals findings outside their scope and refer to an appropriate practitioner.

Directs and supervises supportive personnel, assessing their competence, delegating specific tasks to them and establishing channels of communication.

Administers treatment involving application of physical agents, using equipment, moist packs, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines.

Teaches physical therapy students as well as those in other health professions.

Evaluates, fits, and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices and recommend modification to orthoptist.

OTHER DUTIES

May supervise physical therapy assistants, aides, and athletic trainers.

Conducts and supports research and applies research findings to practice.

Participates in community and community agency activities and helps to formulate public policy.

Constructs, maintains and repairs medical supportive devices.

Directs group rehabilitation activities.

Performs other duties and special project work as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds during a scheduled work shift.

Must be able to see with corrective eye wear

Must be able to hear clearly with assistance

May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases

Able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations

May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary

Transferring, repositioning patients.

Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.

Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.

Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
