Job Summary

Provides, under the direct or indirect supervision of a school, nurse, direct specialized health care activities as dictated and approved by the California Department of Education and Health Services. These include, but are not limited to, specialized feeding, tube feeding, dispensing medication, tracheostomy, tube suctioning, catheterizing, ostomy care, oxygen therapy, and other services that require medically related training per the assigned medical protocol and Individual Education Plan (IEP).
After being trained, provides first aid, CPR and other physical health care procedures, including but not limited to, limitation care, seizures, cardiac problems, menstrual cycle needs and safe handling of students with chronic infectious diseases.
Moves students to and from floor, changing tables and wheelchairs, including limb manipulation, body movement and stretching.
Assists in lifting students from wheelchairs and/or adaptive equipment.
Places and positions/repositions students in therapeutic equipment, pushes wheelchairs and assists with walkers, braces and learning aids.
Assists students with clothing, possessions, or personal care such as feeding, washing, toiletry and changing diapers.
Alerts teacher of changes in status of individual students.
Follows IEP goals.
Maintains individual records of each student s directed by school nurse and/or other appropriate specialist.
Checks student blood sugar levels with designated blood glucose devices as directed.
Sanitizes and cleans changing tables and supplies.
Provides medical supervision to student(s) being transported in county operated vehicles.
Provides instruction to individual or small groups of students in a variety of areas such as math, reading, spelling, language arts, social studies or art.
Assists individual students with daily assignments or make-up work.
Participates in classroom discipline or behavioral management programs.

Requirements / Qualifications

Preferred: Licensed Vocational Nurse certification or Certified Nursing Assistant certification.
Knowledge of strategies and techniques of assisting in the instruction of orthopedically handicapped and medically fragile students
Knowledge of special needs of children with severe and multiple medical problems
Possess an Associate's Degree or higher, or Two (2) years of acceptable coursework at an institution of higher education (48 standardized statewide semester units, or equivalent quarter units, or Passage of the CODESP exam, as the recognized formal local assessment for determining knowledge of reading, writing and mathematics
Possess current CPR card
Possess a valid drivers license
Ability to meet background clearance criteria through live scan fingerprinting
