CAS is currently seeking a Patent Authority Specialist on our Content Operations team. This position is at our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Position Summary The Patent Authority Specialist creates and maintains the world-leading CAS Solutions of chemical, biological, and related scientific patents and patent family relationships with high accuracy. They utilize analytical competencies, problem-solving capabilities, and relevant language skills to assist in developing top-tier patent collections. The role encompasses understanding patent lifecycles and the impact of patent laws and practices of over 109 patent-issuing authorities in more than 50 languages. The intricate patent family relationships necessitate intense complex data analysis and detailed research to distinguish which patents should be indexed by information scientists versus those that should be part of a patent family. Job Accountabilities: Activities of the Patent Authority Specialist includes: Reviewing and analyzing patent data to adhere to CAS bibliographic data standards and guidelines. Assessing and resolving patent data errors using the Patent database building systems, the Patent Family Status Engine, and workflow to meet currency targets. Searching patent issuing authority websites, gazettes, and other databases to analyze and resolve patent family relationships. Build and maintain CAS name translation dictionaries and translate key elements of patent documents to English. Qualifications Bachelor's degree or 3-5 years of patent domain experience. Alternatively, relevant advanced degrees can substitute for years of experience. Excellent team player who is organized and willing to adapt to the needs and requirements of an agile organization. Effective organizational skills, time management, and the ability to multitask. Strong attention to detail and ability to perform complex data analysis. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and ability to make quick and accurate decisions. Familiarity with UNIX and XML is a plus. Ability to communicate with peers with diverse backgrounds. Korean or Japanese language skills are a plus.
