As a  Special Education Teacher,  you will be responsible for the educational needs of students with Autism.
These students will also require a variety of different services, modifications, and accommodations in their educational experiences.
Knowledge of the Autism Spectrum Disorder and the specific needs of the students with ASD is crucial.
The  Special Education Teacher  plays a very critical role in the proper education of students with Autism.
The teacher is unique in that he/she can fit many different roles, as well as, a variety of responsibilities and functions.
General responsibilities of a Special Education Teacher: The  Special Education Teacher  directs and supervises teacher assistants and paraprofessionals.
Teachers must train the teacher assistant and paraprofessionals in the specific of the instruction, evaluate student progress and monitor the effectiveness of teacher assistant's and paraprofessional's implementation of the instructional and behavior management strategies Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment Oversee pre-and post-testing of students Employ special educational strategies, modifications, adaptations, and techniques Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensorylearning, and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the student's individualized education programs(IEPs) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system Modify the general education curriculum based upon a variety of instructional techniques andtechnologies Meet with parents to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children andtheir individualized educational needs Participate and attend the annual meeting/review held by the IEP Committee, to confer with parents,administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
Prepare the next year's Individual Education Plan Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on children and activities, asrequired by law and school policies.  (Progress reports, Monitoring the IEP) Develop Annual Reviews, specification sheets, and report cards Coordinate and assist in parent meetings Provide support with staff and evaluate their performance Maintain effective and assertive communication with staff, parents, and supervisor When needed, Work 1:1 with students Ensure effective communication between home and school with appropriate in-person parent communication and home note documentation Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate these objectives to students Lead, participate or supervise crisis interventions, as needed.
Assist and supervise the collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculumdevelopment meetings, and other professional opportunities, even when they are scheduled outsidework hours Use appropriate methodologies when working with students such as Applied Behavior Analysis orCollaborative Problem Solving or any agreed-upon method which acts in the best interest of thestudent Collaborate with other professionals including a speech therapist, physical therapists, occupationaltherapists, psychologists, behavior specialists, and vocational directors to create a team approach Perform other related work as required Requirements Schedule: 8 hour shift (7:30am to 4pm) Monday to Friday Supplemental Pay: Bonus opportunities Education: Bachelor's (Special Education, Education, Psychology, or related field) Experience: Teaching: 1 year (Preferred) Autism: 1 year (Preferred) Special Education: 1 year (Required) Language: Spanish (Required) English (Required) License/Certification: Puerto Rico Special Education Teaching License (Preferred) Ability to Relocate: Guaynabo, PR 00969: Relocate before starting work (Required) Benefits Dental insurance Health insurance Life insurance Paid time off Professional development assistance Referral program Vision insurance Exempt employee (Classification)
