This role will work a hybrid schedule from our Columbus, Ohio corporate office and will report to the Manager, Tax.

The primary objective of the Finance department is to provide timely and accurate financial information to leadership, business partners, and regulators. The Tax Accountant, Intermediate will be responsible for preparation and peer-review of monthly, quarterly and annual tax returns, assessments and financial information. The selected candidate will be responsible for the preparation of higher complexity tasks and reports.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Ensure proper recording, reporting and compliance based relevant tax and/or compliance guidelines and statutory accounting principles. Maintain an understanding of tax, compliance and statutory rules pertaining to the area and assist with research, analysis, and implementation of changes into the teams' processes. Tax and compliance functions include federal and state income taxes, state and local insurance premium taxes, sales and use tax, personal property tax, real estate tax, 1099 filings and various state surcharges and assessments. Produce reports, tax returns and other filings for statutory, regulatory compliance and management needs. Understand rules, regulations and procedures for systematically handling work. Perform account reconciliations for assigned asset, liability and expense accounts to ensure the accuracy of financial reports and to safeguard the assets of the Company. Run and modify existing reports from financial reporting systems including the core insurance system, general ledger, business objects, and other online data access points. Prepare and record journal entries and required supporting computations. Complete selected elements of the month-end close process. Preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual regulatory, tax and compliance filings for multiple companies. Assist with PBC items for the company's annual audit. Assist with federal and state income tax reporting with third-party tax service providers. Assist with tax and compliance audits with federal, state or local agencies. Identify areas of inefficiency to streamline results. Be part of specialized project teams to achieve accounting department's goals. Champion change management across the department to support an ever-changing business environment. OTHER FUNCTIONS: Ability to effectively use technical tools to perform analysis and create efficiencies in reporting. Ability to understand and access various data sources, using available reporting tools, to meet accounting requirements and operational reporting needs. Ability to work independently to effectively solve problems. Interpret tax, compliance and accounting regulations and develop methods to ensure proper reporting. Ability to work well in a highly skilled team environment. Ability to quickly learn new technology. Demonstrate superb written and oral communication skills. Ability to identify and communicate areas of inefficiency and work with higher-level staff to resolve. Ability to understand how the assigned emphasis area impacts other areas of operation. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: A four-year college degree with a major in accounting or finance is required. At least four years of satisfactory experience in tax, compliance, accounting, finance, or audit. Progress towards CPA is preferred, though not required. This position also requires an understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and ability to learn Statutory Accounting Principles and familiarity with various software applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Sound project management skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and a profit-minded perspective are essential.
