*Location:* Inner City Baltimore Shelter

We have transformed shelter operations, boosting our live release rate from 2% to 90%. We care for approximately 12,000 animals annually, with spay/neuter as our primary surgical focus.
Our brand-new facility features a state-of-the-art surgery suite, and our medical team is currently composed of 5 veterinarians—2 specializing in surgery and 3 in medicine –and we are looking for our 6th to be 2 days on surgery and 2 days on medicine.

*Job Relationship: *Directly reports to the Veterinarian Medical Director under the supervision of the Director of Operations. Works closely with all departments and volunteers.
*Position Summary: *As a Shelter Veterinarian, you will provide leadership and supervision for the medical and animal care department employees, overseeing the health of the shelter population and the surgery suite. You'll work in coordination with the Veterinarian Medical Director, Director of Operations, Veterinary Technician Manager, Surgery Manager, and Animal Care Manager to uphold the highest standards of care and ensure humane treatment for all animals.
*Key Responsibilities:*
* Lead and supervise the staff under your supervision in managing new intakes, surgeries, medical care, and sanitation.
* Oversee the overall health and disease control of shelter animals.
* Help to establish and manage surgical protocols, focusing on spay/neuter and other necessary procedures.
* Ensure humane treatment and high standards of care across the shelter.
* Provide medical diagnostics, treatment, and develop care plans for in-house and foster animals.
* Manage emergency cases, shelter sanitation, and controlled substances.
* Perform humane euthanasia when necessary. Our shelter offers low cost euthanasia and cremation services to the public. Generally, our certified euthanasia technicians perform almost all of the euthanasias needed to be done, however if short staffed a veterinarian may be needed to do so.
* Effectively communicate shelter policies and procedures to staff, volunteers, and the public.
*Qualifications:*
* Licensed DVM or VMD in the State of Maryland.
* DEA license (can be obtained after being hired)
* Maryland CDS Registration (can be obtained after being hired)
* Strong surgical skills with a minimum of one year of practical surgical experience preferred.
* Experience in shelter medicine is highly desirable.
* Minimum one year of experience in a veterinary hospital, clinic, or shelter.
* Minimum two years of supervisory experience preferred.
* Willingness to learn how to handle animals of various temperaments and conditions.
* Strong leadership, communication, and basic computer skills.
*Working Conditions: *Work is performed in an active animal shelter with exposure to various conditions including noise, dust, and animal interaction. Physical exertion is required, such as standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting animals and supplies. Exposure to various animals, cleaning agents, and potential hazards is expected, along with the rewarding experience of caring for animals in need.
