Salary Range:
$161,000.00 - $209,000.00
What's the role?
This is a fantastic opportunity for a hardworking individual to join our team . This global role will support our marketplace product and impact teams, advising on all aspects of product strategy, operations and expansion. You'll counsel Etsy's business, product, marketing, operations, compliance and engineering teams on the application of payment laws and regulations, helping us to build products, adopt policies and expand internationally in a way that meets our obligations, as well as the needs of our community.
This is a full-time position reporting to Assistant General Counsel, Marketing and Commercial. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
This role requires your presence in Etsy's Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Etsy Legal is a dynamic team of lawyers working on some of the hardest technical, commercial, and regulatory problems around - we're looking for a great product lawyer with varied expertise to join our team. In this role you will work with people throughout the company to help Etsy and our brands grow in a manner that complies with the various regulations that apply to Etsy across the world.
What does the day-to-day look like? Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide range of US & international commercial agreements (in particular, negotiating indemnities, limitations of liability, intellectual property rights, SAAS agreements, marketing and ad tech agreements, etc).Work with product and marketing teams at Etsy as they design groundbreaking products and tools, balancing commercial, marketing (both online and offline), compliance and privacy concerns.Spot and solve problems on end-to-end projects.Helping follow, enhance and develop scalable processes for all stages of the contract lifecycle.Work with a global focus.Work with internal partners, others within legal, and outside counsel, through clear communication and effective project management.Answer new questions, tackle uncharted problems, and work with business teams to meet the needs of our dynamic fast-paced environment.Balance sound business and legal judgment and counsel a variety of clients on commercial contract strategy, from start to finish.The most important quality for success on the Etsy legal team is good judgment. Knowing when to say "no", "yes" or "maybe, but..." and know when to escalate. You are mindful that the company is your client, and you are savvy in your advocacy for and protection of your client.Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law. Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are: JD and are admitted to a state bar (preferably NY or CA) and are qualified to work in-house in New York.3+ years experience, at both a law firm and in-house, dealing with issues related to product development and/or marketing for tech and e-commerce companies.You have handled a portfolio of technology, marketing, operational and commercial agreements, and have developed deep knowledge in some areas.Experience being the primary point of contact with clients, and taking the lead in managing the legal side of a project.The ability to speak to technical experts or business leaders in plain English, without legal jargon.Passionate about clearly articulating risk and strategies to mitigate risk to clients and executives.Excellent business, negotiation and presentation skills. While we expect you to be able to read a spreadsheet and build a deck - you should also be able to analyze and communicate the information into a simple, effective message to others.
