THIS ROLE:
Curtin Maritime is looking for innovative thinkers who have a high level of accountability, ownership, and take pride in their work. The preferred candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a lead mechanic role within a shipyard environment or related industry. Hands-on mechanical skills on a wide variety of equipment is required. The position is based in Long Beach, CA
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will work hand in hand with the Shipyard Manager and collaborate with the team to meet below responsibilities and tasks.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Removing machinery from boats, tugs, or barges, for repairs or modification. Disassembly, repair, and testing of machinery such diesel engines, reduction gears, and generators both mobile and stationary. Carrying out services and minor repairs on outboard engines Performing work involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of deck machinery, equipment, and systems. Conducting plumbing and intake repairs. Inspect, service, and repair of MSD Units Installing and repairing motors, pumps, and other machinery used by tugs and barges Troubleshoot and repair of faulty hydraulic, pneumatic, and steering systems. Conducting electrical AC/DC system maintenance and repair Perform preventative maintenance on various equipment Perform rigging duties on jobs, unsupervised Ability to install wheelhouse navigational electronic systems Perform advanced electronic troubleshooting, repairs, and interpret electrical diagrams Submit parts list for jobs Research and reference manufacturer manuals for specifications and recommendations Perform lead mechanic duties and direct the work of assigned mechanics and laborers to ensure maintenance activities are being completed in a proper, cost effective, and timely manner. Identify and report administrative and disciplinary matters to the supervisor. Willing to train junior mechanics and laborers Ability to assist in other departments
WHO YOU ARE:
Qualifications/Requirements
Proven work experience as a marine mechanic Knowledge of marine engines and electrical auxiliary systems Knowledge of marine hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and related parts Read Electrical, machinery, and assembly drawings Make drawings by hand as required Knowledge of relevant equipment, safety procedures, policies, and proper use of tooling in marine maintenance Experience in troubleshooting mechanical, control system, and maintenance issues Proven ability to troubleshoot common maintenance issues Ability to read and understand technical manuals. Ability to work weekends, holidays, at night, and adapt to a variety of schedules & hours if required Possess a valid TWIC card Possess a valid state driver's license Skilled at job assessment for repairs Thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities/limitations

Physical Aptitudes
The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces Able to work in confined spaces and carry heavy tools for extended periods of time Must be able to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges, up and down ladders. Must be comfortable entering tanks and other confined spaces Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.) Ability to lift to 50 pounds unassisted. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to work when exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels, and potentially hazardous equipment.
