Overview
The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB) is a nationally recognized nonprofit developer, owner, and manager of affordable and mixed-income housing and commercial properties. Founded in 1964, TCB has developed over 30,000 housing units as well as office and retail properties and currently owns or manages over 11,000 units of housing. TCB is currently active in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and the District of Columbia. TCB's Legal Department, which is situated in our Boston office, manages all aspects of TCB's corporate and transactional legal work, and consists of 4 attorneys, two paralegals, and, from time to time, student interns or clerks. We act as transactional counsel with respect to complex real estate development transactions and, on some projects, engage and oversee outside counsel; form and maintain in excess of 600 affiliated entities; provide or manage all corporate legal services; and provide counsel on legislative and policy matters.
The Paralegal will be a member of the Legal Department and will assist the department lawyers with all aspects of their work.
Position Description The position is full time, based in the Boston corporate office. TCB offers a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is required a minimum of two days a week The position has two main areas of responsibility: (i) entity formation and maintenance, and (ii) assisting attorneys with complex real estate transactions pre-to-post closing The paralegal supports the attorneys in the legal department with their daily tasks Essential Functions
Corporate
Assist with entity formation and maintenance, including drafting and filing formation documents, preparation and filing of annual reports, complying with filing requirements, obtaining certificates of good standing, obtaining EIN numbers, and similar tasks Interact with staff attorneys, outside counsel, and other TCB staff regarding all aspects of TCB entities.
Transactional
Real estate transactional support, including review of title and survey, management of insurance certificates, and other specified diligence management, ordering and managing legal and tax good standings, judgment and lien searches and similar Preparing and maintaining closing checklists and project files Closing support, including, without limitation, creation of execution copies of documents, collection of signatures, witnessing and/or notarizing documents, distribution of copies/originals and delivery in escrow Revising, proofreading, blacklining, filing, saving and distributing documents Drafting certificates, basic loan documents and agreements, simple amendments, correspondence and documents from forms or models Production of paper and electronic closing binders
Support
Assist Attorneys with special projects Provide daily support to legal team Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of entity types and real estate transactions Familiarity of recording, title and survey matters is a plus Ability to write clearly and draft simple letters and basic documents Strong drafting, written and verbal communication skills Detail oriented with ability to prioritize, handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines Ability to work independently and as part of a team Excellent organizational and filing skills Excellent command of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other computer applications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree and/or Paralegal Certification preferred 3-5 years corporate and transactional paralegal experience Interest and experience in affordable housing, community development and working with non-profit organizations a plus The Community Builders, Inc. is committed to ensuring diversity in its workplace, and candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
