Ohel is seeking a Family Peer Advocate (FPA) who will provide advocacy, family support services, and opportunities for empowerment for families with children ages 0-5 who are experiencing social/emotional and mental health issues. The FPA creates awareness in the community of the special needs of these families and helps families to build partnerships within the community. Family Peer Advocates have 'lived experience' as the parent (biological, foster, adoptive) or primary caregiver of a child/youth with a social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, or developmental disability. The FPA empowers and supports families, provides parent coaching, and locates resources for parents to better help them understand their child's disability and treatment options.The successful applicant will work closely with the families to obtain social services and other community resources.
Applicant must have an HS Diploma or GED, and demonstrated ability to work with and engage hard-to-reach populations as well as families and youth impacted by trauma, poverty, complex stressors, violence, and mental health issues in a culturally competent and trauma-informed approach. Proficiency in MS Word and Excel required and experience with Electronic Health Records preferred. Bilingual Spanish, Mandarin, or Haitian Creole preferred.
This Full-time position is based in Brooklyn with some travel within the New York metropolitan area.Family Advocates are required to complete the Parent Empowerment Program (PEP) training and begin the certification process to earn the Family Peer Advocate Credential (FPA) within a year of being hired.
Salary: $45,000 with $5,000 salary differential for bilingual candidate.
